Things My Mother Taught Me

My mother taught me to APPRECIATE a work well done:
"If you're going to kill each other, do it outside - I just finished cleaning!"

My mother taught me RELIGION:
"You'd better pray that this thing come out from the carpet!"

My mother taught me LOGIC:
"Because I said so, that's why." (False cause for sure!)

My mother taught me FORESIGHT:
"Make sure you wear clean underwear, just in case you get into an accident."

My mother taught me OSMOSIS:
"Shut your mouth and eat you dinner!" (Am I an amoeba?)

My mother taught me how to solve PHYSICS PROBLEMS:
"If I yelled because I saw a meteor coming towards you; would you then listen." (Now I see the reason why I suck in physics XD)

My mother taught me about HYPOCRISY:
"If I've told you once I've told you a million times-Don't Exaggerate!!!"

My mother taught me THE CIRCLE OF LIFE:
" I brought you into this world, and I can take you out."

My mother taught me about ENVY:
"There are millions of less fortunate children in this world who don't have wonderful parents like you do."

The FIVE Diseases You Should Worry About

Are you having fever, or flu recently? Have you observed that people around you are affected by sickness often nowadays? well, you'd better watch out! Last May, scientists met in Geneva, Switzerland, to update the WHO's plans for pandemic preparedness. It looks like crisis could arrive sooner rather than later. Thanks to climate change and drug resistance, a handful of deadly organisms are spreading across the globe; here are five diseases that deserve all our attention.

MALARIA

SPREAD BY: Mosquitoes

KILL RATE: 0.2%

DEATH TOLL: 1 million+ per year

As climate change makes parts of the glabal warmer and wetter, populations of the disease's host, the Anopheles mosquito, are likely to swell. Malaria kills by destroying blood cells and causing kidney failure. Resistance has become such a problem that the WHO now supports the use of the controversial insecticide DDT, once widely banned, to control Anopheles populations in Africa.

The life cycle of Malaria

SMALLPOX

SPREAD BY: Bioterrorism or clinical accident.

KILL RATE: 30%

DEATH TOLL: 500 million; 2 million per year in 1960s

Well, this isn't out in the wild. Anymore. Worldwide vaccination programs eradicated smallpox by1980, but 2 government-approved labs in the U.S. and Russia keeps stores of it. A 2006 investigate report by The Guardian determined that, though very unlikely, it could be made from scratch, or someone could just steal it. Since smallpox is very contagious, the CDC would consider even one confirmed case a "public-health emergency". Vaccines exist, but they can cause serious side effects. There is no cure.

WEST NILE VIRUS

SPREAD BY: Mosquitoes

KILL RATE: 4%

DEATH TOLL: 1 086 (U.S. only)

No one knows how West Nile Virus first got to the U.S. in 1999, but in has since exploded across the country. Less than 1% of people end up with severe complications such as meningitis, fatal encephalitis and polio-like paralysis. There is no cure for the infection, though, so stock up on bug spray.

EBOLA

SPREAD BY: Body fluids

KILL RATE: 50%-90%

DEATH TOLL: 1 507

Ebola is so deadly that outbreaks have, to this point, quickly burned themselves out; direct contact with infected individuals is required for transmission, and victims generally expire before they can travel far. The virus strips in the lining in victim's blood vessels, causing massive internal bleeding. Woe betide humanity if Ebola mutates and becomes transmissible by air.

DENGUE FEVER

SPREAD BY: Mosquitoes

KILL RATE: 0.05%

DEATH TOLL: 10 000+ per year

The mosquitoes that carry dengue, Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, thrive in warm, wet climates. Like malaria, dengue fever (a.k.a. "breakbone fever") is a debilitating disease. Of those who develop more aggressive dengue hemorrhagic fever, 5% die, typically from internal bleeding.

NASA Makes Space U-turn??

As startups vow to beat the once stubborn agency back to moon, officials and analysts say NASA has begun to shift its priorities—and cash—toward a dependence on the growing independent market for spacecraft.

For decades, NASA kept a tight fist around the construction and operation of the spacecraft that ferried its astronauts and hardware into orbit. Now, however, the agency seems to be shifting course, as NASA officials insist that the budding commercial spacecraft fleet represents the only way the United States can realize its dreams of solar-system conquest on schedule and at an affordable cost.

Solar System

Because of a new focus for NASA’s strategic investments, private-sector spaceships could be ready for government service soon, says Sam Scimemi, who heads NASA's Commercial Orbital Transportation Services Program. NASA got its start in aeronautics research, kick-starting a U.S. aviation industry that came to dominate the world.
Following the Capitol Hill mantra that saving money requires spending it, NASA has been signing big-ticket contracts with private space companies to match up their research and development with agency priorities. In February, NASA committed $170 million to Orbital Sciences of Dulles, Va., to help it develop reliable, economical vehicles to send cargo—and, eventually, people—into low Earth orbit. Financial support from NASA represents an important vote of confidence that should help space entrepreneurs leverage even more money from private investors.

Happy Lantern Festival!

Or.. do you prefer calling it the Mooncake festival??

Lantern Festival

However it was first called the Mid-Autumn festival in the Zhou Dynasty.
In Malaysia and Singapore, it is sometimes referred the Mooncake festival or Lantern Festival. This festival is a tradition of Chinese origin, dating back over 3000 years to moon worship in the Shang dynasty. (well, you know, most chinese worship many things, they practise animism)
The Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the two most important holidays in the Chinese calendar, and is a legal holiday in several countries. (whereas in M'sia, it's only a priviledge to chinese schools ;P)Traditionally, on this day, Chinese family members and friends will gather to admire the bright mid-autumn harvest moon, and eat moon cakes and pomeloes together.

How kids usually celebrate this festival XD

Accompanying the celebration, there are additional cultural or regional customs, such as:

1) Eating moon cakes outside under the moon (yea, that was what my family when I was a
child XD)

Mooncake

2) Putting pomelo rinds on one's head
3) Carrying brightly lit lanterns, lighting lanterns on towers, floating sky lanterns (for
me, it's always just the carrying lantern part. I'd once burnt my waist-length long
hair, sobs~ *_*..)
4) Burning incense in reverence to deities including Chang'e (嫦娥)
5) Planting Mid-Autumn trees
6) Collecting dandelion leaves and distributing them evenly among family members
7) Fire Dragon Dances

While Westerners may talk about the "man in the moon", the Chinese talk about the "woman in the moon". The story of the fateful night when Chang'e was lifted up to the moon (this is insane, a person gaining the ability to fly by just taking a pill?? and if it did happened, why would she choose the moon??), familiar to most Chinese citizens, is a favorite subject of poets. Unlike many lunar deities in other cultures who personify the moon, Chang'e lives in the moon. Tradition places Houyi and Chang'e around 2170 BC, in the reign of the legendary Emperor Yao, shortly after that of Huang Di.

Chang'e 嫦娥

There are so many variations and adaptations of the Chang'e legend that one can become overwhelmed and utterly confused. However, most legends about Chang'e in Chinese mythology involve some variation of the following elements: Houyi, the Archer; Chang'e, the mythical Moon Goddess of Immortality; an emperor, either benevolent or malevolent; an elixir of life; and the Moon.

However, my obsession on the myth vanished when I got to know that the Americans had put a man on the moon back in 1969, and the images taken on the moon were nothing more than stones and dusts... Hence, say 'bye' to Chang'e, say 'sayonara' to Yuetu...

After long struggling, I finally get to my conclusion ( Thanks to Ah Ma, she helped a lot! :D) It's time for me to stop doubting myself, and hurrah! Ebulliently should I uphold whatever principles I have and accomplish the mission given ( whoa, 'mission'.. naa, nth big actually :P) Since I've put myself into this shoe, I'd better inure myself to the situation and get moving. Nevertheless I have my friends that care and support me (Thx pals, muah, muah, muahhhh~ have ya'll drown in my torrentious 'attack'??)

Returning from KLIMUN, I realized that 'certain things' have changed. And that makes me wonder, can't we just stay as close friends? Why wanna make things complicated?? Well, other than that, sure! I'm definitely gonna miss everyone there >.<>ll<

Oh, mentioning about that, yea, Senthil and Callum seem to be enjoying themselves in ERAU a lot, guess I'd better work harder to qualify myself for that university, I'm longing to be a part of them! But...but... why is it in Florida??! NO~~~ >0< Sigh, that's the only part I dislike (though I love beaches :P) Anyway, Gambateh onion! You can do it! (uh, i guess so.. hehe..)

ciao!

I wonder if I've done the right thing...
Should I or should I not do this?
Sometimes, to my shock, I felt deeply irritated by 'it'...
I thought this will never occur on me, the thought of being irritated.
But I somehow have foreseen this, so.. hush! I couldn't care less about this

Onion is BACK!

Hey, after a long break from blogspot.com, I'm finally BACK!!!
It's August 22, 2008, 4.02pm, and I'm now in the INTIMA office doing crap...

Haven't been online for centuries, my inbox is filled with forwarded messages and messages from seniors who just left for the States. They seem to be enjoying themselves a lot, which makes me so envy them! I wanna experience new lifestyle too~~~ *smack!* Ouch! Stop dreaming and go back to your work! Go go! (wait...who the heck is that?? O.o )

Searching online for information on my KLIMUN topic, I'm now bereft of spirit. My guts dwindled as I searched more about this event. (oh gosh! What on earth have I involved myself??!! I must be insane~~~!!!)
All delegates are required to be in INTI-UC since Monday, and here I am, still in ICSJ, what am I doing??! Well, due to some unavoidable reason, our team can't make it to the rehearsal... (That's just your excuse! Yes, it's true!! Trust me!! >.<)
Anyway, I'd better get back to work or you'll see a lost onion loitering around the Court and finally end up on the plate as onion rolls.. Ciao! XD

Say NO to 'fishmongers'

Why do mankind have obsessions with what seems to be unimportant?
Is vulgarity the new normal?
Modesty earns one the love and respect of others.
Think of the welfare of others and your own wishes will be fulfilled.
Life is more than what you think it is, so live it to the fullest as time have no mercy towards anyone.

Port Dickson (CD Celebration Trip)

All STACT club members have just came back from Port Dickson last Sunday, and on Monday itself, we could see serious sunburn on each others' face :p ( Wai Hong is the worst with his tomato face, I guess.. XD) And mine, you'll see a red-colored 'T' word in the middle of my face (Woops!)

Everything back there was so so soooooo FUN, that I wished things will never move on, however after this trip, I believe, there will still be many more experiences I can share with all my friends in INTI, this will be the 1st but never the last ( I hope so :P)

Miss You

Miss you? Miss who?!?!
I've received an email from Siaw Wei, and that surprised me! (Not that she didn't send me any messages, but.. it's still that 'wow!' feeling..weird huh?)
Reading her words, then only I realized how much I've missed the olden days. Time flies, and now I'm already a college student. I've never thought of this before. How much I've wished that time never goes on and things remain as it is, but I know, those are indulges in absurd fantasies. Those that are changing will keep on changing, 'cause life changes in an instant, the ORDINARY instant, the only thing that doesn't is 'change' itself.
However the life before us is what we have to face, no matter joyous, sorrow or plain, I know that all of us will sure live our life to the fullest, isn't it so?
No matter how much I miss you, we'll continue our own journey, at a different place, in a different culture and a different timezone..Nevertheless, we're still in touch :) Take care, and good luck!

Siaw Wei

Siaw Wei, the wonderful girl in our 38 gang. :D
With her small eyes (LOL..), she could see things clearer than anyone of us.
With her intelligence, she could solve all our problems.
With her kindness, she has been always reaching out to others, to those in need or not.
And, with her smiles, she has brightened the days we've been together. :)

I wonder if Siaw Wei has reached Australia..
Couldn't turn up for the farewell party upsets me even till now.
Hate myself for falling sick at that moment (WHY~~~ YOU IDIOT!!! BAKA BAKA BAKA!! >.<)
I didn't expect Siaw Wei to fly off this soon, though knowing that one day, some of us will no longer be in Malaysia for studies, but... but... SIAW WEI!!! I don't wanna see you go~~
However, feel happy for her and will always pray for everything she does..
Siaw Wei, feel free to fly, and may your dreams come true. However, please do remember, when you're tired or upset, we will always be by your side :) Come back someday, and we'll go 'yam cha'!! XD
Living alone isn't as easy as it is at home, do take care and all the best, my dear friend!
Miss you! xxx

Loneliness

Reminds me of Mr. Lonely LOL
Here I am again, by myself, facing my dear pc (I think I'm gonna marry it one day LOL)
I thought life over here will make no difference than life at home, in fact, I was wrong...
Though I'm still alone in my room, the fact that Mom isn't here stands out more than ever..
I thought this will be good for the both of us, but neither am I right.
I miss her, miss her more than I could have imagined, and think of her more than the times I've thought of her before..
Sometimes, I wonder, what am I doing here? (for college, obviously..)
I hate to be alone, as much as I hate cockroaches (huh??are those somehow related to each other??)
but I love to be all by myself too (what a contradiction...=.=)
Hope I'll get used to it, hurrah! XD

Holiday (Thaipusam??)

Holiday?? Holiday!!! Yea, holiday. (So what???)LOL
Okay, it's a holiday which doesn't feel like one.
Have been facing the computer for almost the whole day, um, doing my enl assignment (okay, okay, I admit that I kinda chatted for more than half of the time... :P)
And now, my brain is full of domestic violence, domestic violence and domestic violence~ (so??) well, not a great deal.. I'll get them off my mind by the next morning XD
Dad called me and told me that he and mom are now at Vietnam (What?? VIETNAM?!?! Are you KIDDING ME!?!?!) Yea, he was kidding me... LOL
It just turned out that mom lost her handphone in Chieng Mai (no wonder she didn't call me for the pass 2 days, lol) Hey mommy, don't be sad, k? Ask dad to buy you one, or maybe THREATHEN him to buy you one?? lol But hey look, u get to change a new handphone, that's cool! Isn't it??
Raymond hit me on msn just now, and I saw his personal message : "I colored my hair" Whoa!!! That's awesome! Can't wait to see it, dude! Wonder how will it turn out to be..hmm..(Imagining..mm..hmm...)
I think I'll just leave it, and gonna look at it tomorrow! Cya!

Basketball Tournament

STACT Club~~~Sue Yen~~~
Huh?? What's about these two subject being linked together??
Well, well... Since almost all of my friends are not interested in STACT club, there were only Sue Yen and I present at the basketball tournament tonight, kinda lonely... (Naa, just kidding. It was fun, Sue Yen's really nice!!! So do the seniors!! >.<)
And things turned out to be interesting when it came to the semi-final, finally...I see great teams competing against each other (Um, I don't mean the other teams aren't good, just that the ones getting into the semi's and finals are totally awesome!)
Other than that, I felt kinda relieved when I got to know that I need not face someone who had said: "I saw you there, and that's the reason why I'm not joining this club." to me, for the whole night, thanks goodness... (Felt sad though hearing someone saying that to me, I can't help as I'm the bad one..Sigh...)
Anyway, have to buck up now! Go Go GO (Psycho and MS)!!! LOL

Orientation Night

LOL The orientation night...how should I describe it?? A disaster? A nightmare?? Okay, okay...it was fun, that's it.
It was a totally blur case when I was caught up to the stage to play the 'copy cat' game.. I was totally blank at that time itself, the only thing playing in my mind was: "Oh gosh, I'm a dead meat this time..I can't dance!!! >.< "
And then, was the talent search.. Another nightmare..um, which I've managed to escape it :D (Though not feeling proud to mention 'bout the whole 'I've-escaped-instead of-going-for-it issue.. :p)
Anyway, Kennard is an awesome singer!! He really has the vocal!! And he could play the guitar too!! Whoa, how on earth there's a guy like him?! He's good in his attitude, academics, sports and stage performance, wth!! Whoa, WHOA~~LOL
Okay, have to go, Sherlyn's come out from her shower, nitez..

Thursday, January 17, 2008

Happy Birthday, Sherlyn!!!

Yea, that's right, it's 17th Jan and it's our lovely Sherlyn's birthday!
Raymond and I went to Sunway yesterday, just to get her a prezzie and certainly, she loves it a lot!!! (See, I told ya, Nick! Most girls love dolls, LOL You'd better thank the both of us, k?? )
Well, since we had a 5-hour break, for sure we'd celebrated Sherlyn's birthday with all our classmates and yummy! the cake tasted awesome!! (I guess everyone knows that I love cakes, don't you?)
Everything went on smoothly. Um, at least it was smooth till Sherlyn found out that she'd actually left her handphone elsewhere which later all of us went for a 'phone hunt' with her (uh, we even went into the ladies' just to check if she'd left it there :p)
Unfortunately, our poor birthday girl couldn't get her handphone back, sob~ (don't cry Sherlyn, ask your boyfriend to buy you one as your birthday present. Um, if he doesn't mind spending.. ;P)
And now, I'm all by myself again.. Though I'm used to it, I can't help but to feel lonely and solemn, getting emotional again.. (Hey, I'm kinda moody recently, am I an 'emo' or what??? No~~~ LOL)
Tired, tired, tired..Damn TIRED!!!! I wanna sleep I wanna sleep I wanna SLEEP~~~ But I just couldn't fall asleep, help!!!
*Fallen asleep* =.=zzz Nitez, ppl... Nitez...

Mood Swing

Went to campus an hour before the lecture starts, and saw the boys were playing basketball in the court... I don't know why, but feel not as energetic as usual (perhaps because I haven't have my 'coffee-of-the-day'?)
Bought my coffee and was on my way back to campus, at the main entrance, I met Sherlyn and we both walked towards the basketball court, to where the boys are, joined them and whoops! I missed almost all my shots, sad... =.=
During the enl, everything was fine, except my mind was in a blank state (um, not the 'blank slate' by John Locke...) Nothing came to me, though I'd been racking my brain for that stupid 'piracy' title =.=
And then it's psychology, gosh! A pop quiz is awaiting! (at least that was what I thought on my way up the stairs) but it turned out, Miss Mathuri was teaching us 'bout the neurobiological basis throughout her lecture, swt... Weren't we supposed to have a pop quiz today, that was what she told us on Tuesday! Grrr... All my hard works... (argh!! I can't keep things long in my brain, doesn't she know that my hippocampus is partially damaged?!?)
Well, fine.. That doesn't matter..It's alright actually..
Yea, at least till someone told me that she's not going to the food fair...
This sucks, she was the one who was so eagerly saying that she wants to go and at the end it turned out that she can't go because she has a date with her boyfriend...
But luckily, at the end of the lecture, we found out that the food fair would be held on the 22th Jan, so...Awesome! We'll go on that day then!
Trying to be honest, I told them I had a mood swing in campus, or maybe even at the time I was saying it. However it turned out to be like a joke, lol Do I really look like a good girl, that i won't be emo at all?? *Faint~*
Nevertheless, after having lunch at J'Co's,hmmm.... I'm back to the talkative me again!!
Yay, yay!!! J'Co rocks! and Raymond rocks too!!! Uh, at least he rocks till he dropped the parking ticket in the parking lot and we havta drive back to get the ticket which was later found on the floor, what a nuisance...but it was really FUN!! lol (Hey, Raymond! We'll go to Sunway Pyramid again next time! Let's see what's gonna happen on our 3rd visit there!! LOL)
